Air Canada Threatens NHL

Air Canada Airlines

Hey guys, here we go with post number two, has anyone seen the what I think is ridiculous news out of Canada. Supposedly Air Canada has decided to threaten to take away their funding from the NHL (National Hockey League). Now, big whoop right? RIGHT. Believe it or not, Air Canada is NHL's biggest financial backer and holds a lot of power within the hockey league that spans across the United States border into Canada. So why is Air Canada so infuriated you ask that they would actually threaten to take away their funds? It had to be something epic right? like the president of the NHL flying with American Airlines........

Actually this is all over a fight that happened between two players for the Montreal Canadians and the Boston Bruins. Air Canada "sent a letter to the NHL demanding 'immediate' and 'serious' action against Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara for his hit on Canadians forward Max Pacioretty." Now I understand that this is about safety and the welfare of the players, but hockey has never been about safety. We all want to see the guy with three teeth duke it out with the guy with a nose caved in and a black eye. This sport is not about safety. The players know what they are signing up for and they agreed to those terms. This is just another attempt to add more rules to sports in which they don't belong. Before long, hockey players will have a pad for every piece of skin that is slightly exposed, football players helmets will be twice the size they are now with padding, NASCAR drivers only going 50mph around a track, and pitchers in a baseball game will be wearing a batters helmet.

Things have been getting out of hand recently with all the sports trying to promote more safety rather than working on the game itself. Why dont we take some of that funding that these big corporations are giving and put it towards having adequate officiating. Just a thought. Now, Don't misunderstand me, I believe that player safety is important, but I believe that we have reached adequate safety precautions for most sports a decade or so ago. No matter what you do, there will be freak accidents happen. Its inevitable. People will get hurt. People will get injured. Its a part of the sports we all love. Kudos to you Air Canada. In your attempt to better the game, you seem to have lost sight on what hockey is all about.
