Japan Rocked By Earthquake

 Magnitude 8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan

Just a quick blog post for now, as most of you all know Japan has been struck by a violent earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 on the Richter scale. There are also tsunami warnings for much of the Hawaiian and west coast.I can't tell you anymore than what you will learn from the mass media about this specific earthquake, I'd like to inform you all of some of these terms or facts behind earthquakes to help you better understand the world around us and how powerful Mother Nature really is.

We will start with earthquakes. The following chart is what is called "Richter Scale". The first image is more of a scientific way of reading the scale, while the other is a more understandable one for us to all apply what we have experienced too.

The way the Richter scale works is it measures the strength of an earthquake. The most confusion that takes place within this scale is most assume that if you have a quake that is say a 7.0 on the Richter Scale that it is 7 times stronger than a 1.0 earthquake. This is FALSE. "Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude." To put this into terms for someone that is not a specialist in studying earthquakes this means that if you have a 7.0 earthquake, that earthquake is 10 times as powerful as a 6.0 earthquake. So take the earthquake in Japan for example, it is a 8.9 magnitude on the Richter. So if you have ever
felt an 8.0 earthquake, this quake was at least 9 times stronger than the 8.0 you have felt. Needless to say, these quakes that have such a high magnitude are extremely destructive. News reports have said that hundreds of bodies have been found and that the destruction is following this quake will be catastrophic. We must all keep the Japanese people in our prayers and thoughts as they try to recover from one of the fiercest earthquakes in the history of the world.

Peter King vs. Islam

Peter King: Definition of Ignorant

Hey all, I am coming to you today to discuss this controversial topic of Peter King vs. Islam. We have one man that supposedly represents some part of this country that says that Muslims are basically nothing more than America's enemies. According to Peter King, Muslims are "an enemy living amongst us". Peter King says that at least 80% of all mosques in America are ruled by Muslim extremists. Mr. King also says that no Muslims within America ever coroperate with law enforcement...Really? Where are your facts to back up your statements...He had absolutely nothing to support his claims against Muslims and will now hopefully become a laughing stock among us all.  Peter King needs to also realize that 100% of what he says is completely bogus and completely based on his frustrations, skewed opinions, and revenge he wants to gather from 9/11. While as an American people we are all upset over such a tragedy we have to understand that it is not every Muslims fault that this has happened. While it is only a certain terrorist group that happens to follow Islam within not only the Middle East, but now all over the world. As a country, we have learned from our mistakes such as Japanese internment camps during World War II. At that time, we singled out the race of Japanese Americans and saw them all as a threat to our welfare and we isolated them from us. Actions such as this are uncalled for and it seems that this is exactly what Mr. Peter King wants.

Most of the Muslims that come to America to escape such unrest in their home nations, not to strike fear within the American public. We all have to realize if we see a woman with a hijab on or a man praying on the rug toward Mecca, we cannot feel fear within us. If we so much as hear a language that we feel is from the Middle East, especially on an airplane, we all get a little uncomfortable, BUT we all have to realize the is a nation of people .We CANNOT call all terrorist Muslims, because they are not. Terrorist can be anyone at anytime that decides to strike fear within the public.  If Jared Lee Loughner(man that shot and killed many outside a grocery store in Tucson, including injuring Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords) was a Muslim, we would all be against all Muslims again, yet because he was a white male, we all say "what a shame" or "he wasn’t right in the head". What about his religion? Let's say he is catholic...Would we all point the finger at the Catholics around the world? We need to educate ourselves on who is actually at fault when it comes to the attacks of September 11th and who we as a nation are actually fighting against.

We are not fighting Muslims; we are fighting terroristic groups that happen to be Muslim. Before I wrap up this blog post, I would like to say I am a Christian and NOT a Muslim. I do not believe in the Muslim traditions or beliefs but I do respect the people within the religion. I respect people that have done no harm and it is a shame that people of Islam that come to America get blamed and portrayed in such a bad way. We as a nation need to inform ourselves of the truth, starting with the ignorant Mr. Peter King.

Air Canada Threatens NHL

Air Canada Airlines

Hey guys, here we go with post number two, has anyone seen the what I think is ridiculous news out of Canada. Supposedly Air Canada has decided to threaten to take away their funding from the NHL (National Hockey League). Now, big whoop right? RIGHT. Believe it or not, Air Canada is NHL's biggest financial backer and holds a lot of power within the hockey league that spans across the United States border into Canada. So why is Air Canada so infuriated you ask that they would actually threaten to take away their funds? It had to be something epic right? like the president of the NHL flying with American Airlines........

Actually this is all over a fight that happened between two players for the Montreal Canadians and the Boston Bruins. Air Canada "sent a letter to the NHL demanding 'immediate' and 'serious' action against Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara for his hit on Canadians forward Max Pacioretty." Now I understand that this is about safety and the welfare of the players, but hockey has never been about safety. We all want to see the guy with three teeth duke it out with the guy with a nose caved in and a black eye. This sport is not about safety. The players know what they are signing up for and they agreed to those terms. This is just another attempt to add more rules to sports in which they don't belong. Before long, hockey players will have a pad for every piece of skin that is slightly exposed, football players helmets will be twice the size they are now with padding, NASCAR drivers only going 50mph around a track, and pitchers in a baseball game will be wearing a batters helmet.

Things have been getting out of hand recently with all the sports trying to promote more safety rather than working on the game itself. Why dont we take some of that funding that these big corporations are giving and put it towards having adequate officiating. Just a thought. Now, Don't misunderstand me, I believe that player safety is important, but I believe that we have reached adequate safety precautions for most sports a decade or so ago. No matter what you do, there will be freak accidents happen. Its inevitable. People will get hurt. People will get injured. Its a part of the sports we all love. Kudos to you Air Canada. In your attempt to better the game, you seem to have lost sight on what hockey is all about.
